Kyle Slocum Named as the New Head Coach of Lowell High School Wrestling Team

Lowell, MI - August 4, 2025 - Lowell High School is proud to announce the appointment of Kyle Slocum as the new Head Wrestling Coach of the Red Arrows. Slocum becomes just the fifth head coach in program history, taking over following the departure of RJ Boudro, who was recently named the new head coach at Grand Valley State University.

Coach Slocum is a highly experienced and well respected leader within the Lowell Wrestling community. Over the past 18 seasons, he has served as a key assistant coach and has been instrumental in 12 of the program’s 14 MHSAA Team State Championships. His knowledge of wrestling, commitment to developing student-athletes, and strong connection to the Lowell community make him a natural fit to lead Lowell’s wrestling program into its next chapter.

“We are thrilled to name Kyle Slocum as the next head coach of Lowell Wrestling,” said Patrick Russell, Lowell High School Athletic Director. “Kyle’s leadership, experience, and dedication to Red Arrow Wrestling are unmatched. He has helped shape the program’s identity over the past two decades, and we’re excited to see him carry that legacy forward. With the current coaching staff remaining in place, including the appointment of longtime assistant coach Matt Dood as Associate Head Coach, the program is well-positioned for continued success.”

Coach Slocum has also led the Lowell youth wrestling program, helping to develop future Red Arrows by instilling strong fundamentals and a passion for the sport. A state champion at Belding High School and former varsity wrestler at Michigan State University, Slocum began his coaching career at Lansing Eastern High School before joining the Lowell staff. Coach Slocum was named the 2025 Division 2 Assistant Coach of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport.

Coach Slocum shared his thoughts on stepping into the head coaching role:

“I look forward to continuing the tradition of Lowell Wrestling that has been developed over the 18 seasons that I’ve coached with Dave Dean and RJ Boudro, building on the foundation laid by Gary Rivers and Dave Strejc.  I’m very excited that the staff will remain intact, which has been the cornerstone of our success.  Matt Dood has been an integral part of Lowell Wrestling. I look forward to working alongside him and writing the next chapter in Lowell Wrestling.”

Lowell Wrestling’s legacy of excellence has been built on consistent leadership, strong community support, and a commitment to developing both strong athletes and stronger individuals. With Coach Slocum at the helm, that legacy is set to continue for years to come.
