Editor - 31 Years at the Ledger

What I enjoy most about my job is putting together a quality paper with local, interesting stories. And working with everyone in the office - they are my second family. We have a lot of fun here, which makes it nice to come to work.

When I'm not working I enjoy reading, gardening, cooking/canning and spending time with my family.

Graphic Artist - 48 Years with the Buyers Guide

I love the flexible schedule. My fellow employees are great to work with. We do a lot of fun activities for lunches, birthdays & holidays, like soup days, cook-outs, pizza, bring your dresser picture to work day, hat day, etc. We have football pools and final four basketball pools. We'll bet on anything at qualifies to get someone else to buy lunch. Our wonderful boss even painted the doors with black chalkboard paint so we can play hangman. Way too much fun to call it work.

Away from work I like spending time with friends and my family. I like reading, gardening, canning, boating, swimming, cross-country skiing, yoga and football.

  • Helen Grant

Proofreader and Receptionist - 3 Years at the Ledger

There are so many things I enjoy about my job, but first and foremost, is the feeling of being valued and appreciated. The variety of my duties make my job more fun than work and the relaxed environment, despite deadlines, is due to great teamwork and camaraderie. Not to mention, I love to read so proofreading well-written news for my hometown paper is a very good thing.

I'm an avid gardener and love being outside with nature; doing yard work, walking the dogs, sitting on the porch reading (again, with the dogs), music and did I mention dogs?!

Sports Reporter - 4 Years at the Ledger

I’ve been at the helm of the Ledger Sports staff since 2019, and there’s no position I’m more passionate about.

My grandfather created the History of Lowell Football information book, and since then I’ve added on to that by building out the Lowell Red Arrows sports historical archive that can be found at LHS. The project took over 2000 man hours and started when I interned at LHS in 2016.

A second-generation Red Arrow, I graduated from LHS in 2013. When I was a freshman in high school in 2009, I created what would go on to be the Lowell Red Arrows Facebook page. Since then Red Arrow sports has been an integral part of my identity working alongside LHS in some form or capacity the last decade.

I golfed at LHS. I understand that some sports always seem to get more coverage than others, and I’m always trying to provide equal coverage for all sports out there. Contact me, justinorin94@gmail.com with your story ideas.

  • Cliff Yankovich

Reporter - 10 Years at the Ledger

I have written for the Ledger off and on for about 10 years, much more regularly over the last couple years.

Hands down my favorite thing is to help people tell their story. Every one has some interesting aspect of their life or something they they are passionate about. Did I mention sharing my opinion in Op-Ed pieces? Close second.

I enjoy working on my inner rock star on a set of electronic drums in the basement. Talent like mine is best kept to oneself in headphones. Our grand kids are a hoot. Rode my first motorcycle in 1975 and have been riding ever since. My current one is a dual sport 2017 Zero DSR - a fully electric motorcycle built to go on smooth pavement when we can find it or dirt and gravel roads. Perfect for living in Lowell.

Contributing writer - With the Ledger since Jan. 2023

I am a professional writer, editor, and reporter who returned to the Lowell Ledger in January of 2023 after nearly a decade-long hiatus.

I began “writing” at an early age, dictating stories about encounters with woodland creatures to my mother on camping trips. In 2006, I earned a bachelor’s degree in writing at Grand Valley State University, studying primarily under Michigan author Ander Monson.

I enjoy writing for the Ledger because many of my heroes—Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Peter Parker, and Ben Urich, for example—worked for a local newspaper.

I was hired to city council meetings but have taken interest in reporting on “geek” topics like comic books, tabletop gaming, and technology, writing about the latter in an ongoing series on artificial intelligence. I am the husband of a beautiful, hard-working, and dedicated wife and the father of three perfect kids and two goofy dogs.

  • Bill Lee

Reporter - 2 years at the Ledger

Overall, I love the process of putting a story together – from the interview, to transcribing it, to writing the story itself. I love interviewing people about their jobs, their lives. Everyone has a story to tell and I enjoy telling their stories. When I'm not working, I like spending time with my wife and daughter and visiting friends and family who are located across the country – New England, Florida, and Colorado.

What I enjoy most about my job at the Ledger is staying busy - there are always new projects to work on. I also appreciate the flexibility.

When I'm not at work I enjoy spending time with my family, camping, crafting and my pets (2 dogs and 1 cat).

I love the small-town atmosphere of The Lowell Ledger that’s been in business for 130 years and will stay around for a long time because people love hometown journalism.

When I am not working, I write fiction, short stories, travel, read, podcast, and garden.
