Over a year ago, Lowell resident, Dawn Price, received an invitation to her daughter’s gender reveal party for Dawn’s soon-to-be grandbaby. Her daughter asked guests to bring a book for a gift. Instead of buying a baby book, Price, a retired art teacher and now yoga instructor, decided she would make her own book. She cut, copied, colored and pasted a book together called, “Yogi Baby,” to give to her soon-to-be granddaughter. “That was the gift at the baby shower and then it just grew from there,” said Price. “That one, I just sat down and wrote and I’d like to say that I had a download from the universe. I was working with my younger daughter, planning a workshop on the eight winds of yoga, and thought I had never seen anybody write about the eight winds of yoga for children.”

The first book became a prototype for a new book entitled, “Yogi Baby Forever,” that will be launched on May 15 and available for purchase on Amazon. Mainly, because of a back injury, Price started practicing yoga in 2005 and began the process of becoming an instructor in 2018. She specializes in Yin Yoga, which is slow and down on the floor, and what she calls the “art of relaxation.” She enjoys sharing yoga with adults but thought that it would be wonderful to share the same concepts with children. She thinks children, ages 5-10, are probably most appropriate for her new book but sees older children and adults connecting with it too.

“Growing up is a process and challenges and struggles are a part of that process,” said Price. “In ‘Yogi Baby Forever,’ I think kids will relate to the character who tells the story, Arietta. She is upset because she sees her friends succeed in areas where she struggles. Through her time, where she spends with another character, Yogi Baby or YB, Arietta has time to share her frustrations. YB listens and offers her a time to calm down and breathe.” In the book, Arietta has a moment of self-actualization, based on her meeting with YB. She knows what she needs to do – to create a path for herself.

Many of these themes relate to the practices and philosophies of Yoga. Price is hoping children and parents will connect with this first book, because she has plans for several other books with new characters who interact with YB. Each one will have a theme based on a Chakras (Chakras are used to describe the way energy moves throughout the body). Each book will present a new character, who is wrestling with a certain conflict in their lives.

The last year has been a bit of a whirlwind of information and tasks, when it came to publishing the book. The creating, the writing, Price discovered was the easy part. The process of actually publishing and marketing the book has been the hard part. Price decided to hire a hybrid publisher, Miriam Laundry Publishing, which helped walk her through the process, like providing an editor and uploading “Yogi Baby Forever” to Amazon. Price found her own illustrator but even that process took over six months. Also, she has had to promote the book mostly on her own and that has forced her to discover more about social media than just Facebook. “This has been a huge learning curve in the last year,” said Price. “I’ve had a presence of Facebook for a long time and feel comfortable with that, but I’m just learning about hashtags and collecting more followers. Instagram has been totally new to me and I’ve also been self-tutoring on how to make the website work.”

In the end, she is just thankful and happy that the process is over and that she is able to share “Yogi Baby Forever” with the world. She believes strongly that families will appreciate the messages that come from the book. In the modern age of television, computers, and phone screens, a time to slow down and reflect might just be what families need.

“I hope that if a parent would to buy it for a child, that they find it to be an interactive experience, where they both get on the floor, try the yoga poses, do the breathing exercises together, where it is a shared practice between parent and child,” said Price.

You can find “Yogi Baby Forever” on Amazon, starting on May 15. Price will be doing a book signing on May 24 at Barnes and Noble, at the Woodland Mall from 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. She is also hoping to do a reading at the Englehardt Library and other Barnes and Nobles in the area, as well.
