When the Lowell Wrestling team hosts a home event, their goal? Make it memorable. Whether it’s a packed assembly dual, the annual Gary Rivers Tournament, postseason, or even just a dual on a Wednesday night like last week, Lowell is always trying to make their home events as entertaining as possible. On Wednesday as Lowell hosted D3 state power Richmond, it was not only Senior Night, but a Cancer Awareness dual.

The two squads teamed up to raise funds for Ascension Michigan GI and Colorectal Cancer Center, as well as the Lowell Community for those on a cancer journey.

“The sport of wrestling has brought us all together this evening but tonight we wrestle for something bigger than wrestling or winning or losing. We are here to support a family from each school who is going through a battle with cancer. Both families have asked to remain anonymous and want the proceeds to go to fighting cancer in our respective communities. During our dual meets, we will be sending around a QR code to collect money. The proceeds collected will go to Ascension Michigan GI and Colorectal Cancer Center in Macomb County and to the families who need support in the Richmond and Lowell Communities,” the club stated. The fundraiser raised $2,490 at the time of this writing and closed on Monday.

Lowell wore specially made pink custom singlets, produced by local custom uniform company RaizedUp, who also makes Lowell’s Pink Arrow uniforms, and teamed with Teamfi, a free fundraising tool for teams. Both organizations are run or co-run by Lowell alumni.

It was also senior night as Lowell celebrated their senior wrestlers and managers.

On the mat, Lowell won 51-21 over the Blue Devils. Winning matches were Jarrett Smith, Braddock King, Carter Cichocki, Jackson Blum, Logan Dawson, Trevor Boone, Casey Engle, Jack Lamoreaux, Jared Boone, and Tacho Gonzales. The latter two joined the Lowell Ledger podcast following the dual to talk about how the dual went and looking forward.

Both Boone and Gonzales are a part of families that have been heavily involved in the program in recent years. Jared’s older brother Austin was a 4-time individual champion with the Red Arrows, his younger brother Trevor is on the team this year, and has two younger brothers, Dylan and Cody. Tacho has had brothers and sisters who have wrestled for the Red Arrows; George, Allexis, and Reese, in addition his younger brother Pistachio also wrestles on the team.

“Definitely a surreal feeling knowing that I have younger brothers also looking at me, how I looked at my older brother doing just what he loved, just going out there, wrestling his hardest and putting it all out on the mat,” Jared said.

The wrestling postseason is quickly approaching, with Lowell’s team district taking place on February 7th, Lowell getting the winner of Forest Hills Central and Ionia in the district finals that night at FHC. It’s just one day at a time for those wrestlers.

“How we see it is, we're not prepping for the whole season. We're prepping for every single day in individual practices. That's what we're prepping for, to have the best practices for that day, not worrying about what's next week or what's next month,” Tacho told the Ledger podcast.

On Friday, Lowell defeated D1’s fifth-ranked squad Oxford 49-15 at Michigan State University’s Munn Arena prior to the Michigan State dual. From Detroit Catholic Central’s assembly dual to competing in college arenas, the atmospheres Lowell has wrestled in this year doesn’t phase the Red Arrows who are used to the limelight.

“It’s just another match,” Boone told the Podcast when referring to the Lowell Assembly Dual, which was a wild atmosphere in front of their peers. “Honestly, I don't think me or my teammates were really afraid of going out there. It was just a fun time,” Jared added.

In both matches, against Oxford and Richmond, both wrestlers were able to pick up wins.

“He ankle picked me pretty quickly off the bat, so I just had to focus, get my mind right, and eventually came out with the win,” Gonzales said of his win against Richmond.”

Lowell finishes their conference portion of the schedule before starting districts. Both wrestlers along with 12 other Lowell wrestlers will not only look to make a state championship run as a team, but individual runs as well.
